Title: Khon: Thai Masked Dance-Theatre

Workshop leader: Benjamin Tardif

In this workshop we will explore the foundations of the monkey role in the context of Khon Thai classical masked dance-theatre. The dynamics and the balance between its 3 dimensions, namely its animality, its warrior duty and the aesthetics of classical Thai dance provide the monkey role its physicality and a specific body language. Their variations translate into a large coded dance vocabulary used to express various emotions and to mime narrative texts.

Participants will:
– gain an overview of the evolution of Khon performances
– understand the characteristics and conventions of the monkey role in Khon
– explore 3 types of movements (animal, warrior, Thai classical dance) of the monkey role
– practice movements to embody various emotions while wearing a mask
– experiment with a Khon technique to mime narrative texts
– explore the process of transformation from natural movement to a Thai classical dance aesthetic
