Master class and theatre information

Master class
All participants will take part in one interactive/synchronous The Suzuki Method of Actor Training online master class with ISTA artist Shane Jones. This will take place on Saturday 7th November 2020 from 2:00-3:30pm [Singapore time].

Master class description
The Suzuki Method of Actor Training is a rigorous physical discipline drawn from such diverse
influences as ballet, traditional Japanese and Greek theatre and martial arts. Through regular
training in the Suzuki Method students will heighten their physical power and commitment to
each moment on the stage.

Students will focus on improving physical expression, stage presence and specificity,
precision and control of movement and action. This training encourages actors to investigate the
elements of time and space, make bold and considerate theatrical choices, and develop a strong
understanding of their physical language in relationship to their fellow actors, the performance
space and the audience.

To prepare for the master class:
• Please wear loose comfortable clothing to move in and socks.
• Have a towel and water handy.
• Please make sure that you have arranged your space to be able to move freely in. Ideally this space will have a wooden, or at least soft floor – no cement if possible for safety reasons.
• Camera angle will need to show a full body clear ‘visual’ of participants’ knees (so the master class leader can ensure correct knee posture).

All participants will watch The Winter’s Tale performed by Cheek by Jowl (run time 2 hour 25 minutes). Teachers will watch this in their own time, asynchronously. Please make sure that you have enjoyed the performance prior to the start of the IB workshop.

Or watch it on Youtube here.

Cheek by Jowl also provides a complementary education pack that includes teaching materials, interviews and the live captures. If you wish to access these materials please sign up at this link:

Artist biographies

Dinos Aristidou – Teacher workshop leader (TWL)
I’m a playwright, director and education consultant working internationally. Covid-19 has changed my process working digitally to make/share work. I am working with Birmingham Royal Ballet and as creative learning director of UCAN, developing Storystarters. As artistic director/playwright of the Hear Us Out Verbatim Theatre Festival I am working with older people and their stories.

My passion is for Verbatim Theatre, working with communities to discover empowering ways of theatrically presenting untold stories. My work with students and teachers focuses on reflection, its role in learning, social activism and building compassion. As an artist I am interested in what it means to make art with kindness.

I have an interest in curriculum and was manager of the curriculum review of IB MYP Arts. As a consultant I am involved in the development of the IB Diploma Theatre course as well as Diploma Literature and Performance. I have designed Diploma Theatre teacher workshops, online courses and teacher support materials.

Shane Anthony Jones – Master class leader (MCL)
I work as a freelance director, choreographer and producer of theatre. Born in New Zealand I now live in Australia working freelance for a variety of theatre companies across text-based theatre to musicals to physical theatre. Initially trained in dance, acting and physical theatre it did not take long before I discovered a love for directing.

I have completed post-graduate studies in Directing at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney, travelled to New York City to study physical actor training with the SITI Company and I was awarded a Mike Walsh Fellowship to study Film Directing at New York Film Academy in NYC. As a director working across diverse mediums I am committed to creating and retelling engaging contemporary stories of social relevance and importance.

Since 2013 when ISTA Rep Liane Campbell invited me to join the wonderful ISTA pool of artists I have worked as a teacher workshop leader, SEL and led master classes and artist in residencies at schools and festivals. I love the experience of sharing my skills and knowledge in directing, physical theatre, Viewpoints, The Suzuki Method of Actor Training, Butoh, devising and dramaturgy.
