About your workshop leaders

Category 1 training

Workshop leader: Brent Whitted
I have been involved with the IBO since 2006; at various stages during this tenure I’ve served as a teacher, workshop leader, examiner, workshop developer, textbook writer, and curriculum consultant. My workshop leader experience has taken me across the globe – from Qatar and Hong Kong to Oxford and San Francisco and many places in between. My teaching work has focused on the following courses: Theatre, Literature, Language and Literature, Literature and Performance, and Theory of Knowledge. Outside my IB engagements, I work as a theatre, film, and voiceover actor represented by Bankston Talent Agency.

Category 2 training

Workshop leader: Rene Ribant-Amthor
I am a passionate educator with 25 years of experience in Detroit, MI, USA. I just recently earned my Doctor of Education degree with a study focused on the impact of the IB Learner Profile on the worldviews of teachers. I have taught IB English I and II A: Language and Literature and IB Theatre I and II. I am currently a MYP Coordinator and Assistant Principal in the Detroit area. Additionally, I am an IB Theatre Examiner and a member of the latest IB Theatre curriculum review team. Creating theatre with adolescents and working with the adults who guide them has maintained my faith in humanity.

ISTA Rep: Keriann O’Rourke
I am a Canadian who has recently repatriated after 16 years living in Singapore back to the Great White North. I have worked in education as a Kindergarten teacher as well as a drama and dance middle school specialist. I am a proud member of the ISTA team and work as an Event and Communications Manager.

Master class leader: Fenella Kelly
I am an international drama specialist, teacher, teacher trainer and dancer. I co-founded the International Theatre company in Istanbul, was a member of the Physical Theatre company in Brazil and in contemporary dance companies in the United Kingdom, India, Brazil and Egypt. Now I am a freelance artist based in the UK.

I love all the performing arts and play the flute and saxophone in bands, learn drumming and sing in choirs. I also teach and perform Latin American dances including salsa and tango. Since 2008 I have been learning Kathakali and now teach and perform this dance-theatre tradition.

Theatre performance

Drumfolk by Step Afrika!

Time: 8:00pm
Date: Friday 24th June 2022

Location: Fichandler Stage
Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater
1101 Sixth Street SW
Washington, D.C. 20024

Electrifying percussive dance fused with contemporary art forms fuels Step Afrika!’s latest production, Drumfolk, inspired by the Stono Rebellion of 1739 and the Negro Act of 1740 in South Carolina. State laws mandated that enslaved Africans could not assemble or use their drums which were used to signal the uprising. They took away the drums, but they could not stop the beat. This is the rich story of a movement that could not be stopped and transformed African American culture from then to the present day. The immersive production will be the first of three as part of a multi-year collaborative partnership between Step Afrika! and Arena Stage.

Run time: 90 minutes

About Baltimore

Welcome to Batlimore, hon! We are thrilled to have you all come to St. Timothy’s School and participate in the 2022 ISTA IB DP Theatre Workshop! Baltimore, fondly called Charm City, is known for Natty Boh’s to pink flamingos, Maryland crabs with old bay seasoning to snowballs, this eclectic city has a fascinating history and culture.

About the city
Baltimore is rich with history. Francis Scott Key wrote lyrics to the American national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner”, during the war of 1812 while Fort McHenry was defending the Baltimore harbor. We are home to many firsts: the first cathedral in the United states, the first monument dedicated to President George Washington, the first wax museum of African American history, the first dental school in the world, the first female professor of medicine, first water company in the U.S., and on June 23 1784, 13-year-old Edward Warren, using a hot air balloon invented by the Montgolfier brothers in France 1783, went airborne marking it the first manned flight in Maryland and the United States.

Second only to Ellis Island, Baltimore’s waterfront neighborhood, Fell’s Point, was the second largest point of immigration in the U.S. Only an hour away is the capital city of Maryland, Annapolis, which was known as the Athens of America in the 17th century, and once served as the capital of the United States. Baltimore is also home to philanthropist George Peabody, who established the first major intellectual and arts center in an American city. His philanthropic vision has led him to be considered the first modern philanthropist and inspired Johns Hopkins to provide the establishment of the university and hospital named after him, William and Henry Walters to found the world-famous art museum across the street from the Peabody Conservatory, and Enoch Pratt to underwrite America’s first public library two blocks south of Peabody.

The city has been a pioneer in technology, in fact the first long-distance telegram message was sent by Samuel B. Morse between Washington D.C. and Baltimore in 1844, which read “What hath God wrought”. If you have ever played Monopoly, you may recognize B&O Railroad, which was the first commercial railroad in the United States and the first long-distance track. There are many notable historical figures that have called Baltimore their home: Frederick Douglass, Thurgood Marshall, as well as athletes Babe Ruth and David Phelps and celebrities such as Billie Holiday, Oprah Winfrey, David Hasselhoff, and John Waters.

In every supermarket you will find products from Domino Sugar and McCormick & Co that are headquartered in Charm City. Be sure to try some Maryland crabs with Old Bay seasoning, or my favorite, old bay and honey wings! If you’ve ever enjoyed a 7-11 slurpee or a shaved ice dessert at the beach, you have Baltimore to thank. Invented during the Industrial Revolution, snowballs became a way to cool down enough to survive the humid Baltimore summers. The shaved ice treat is doused in fruit syrup and robbed with marshmallow cream. From food to pop culture and many historical firsts, Baltimore is quite the city! So grab a snow ball, turn on Hairspray, and dive into some city fun, hon!

Weather
Average temperatues for 23-25 are 85° Farenheit during the day (29.5° celcius) with a low of 64° farenheit at night (18°celcius). The recorded high is 99° farenheit (37°celcius) but I do not anticipate it to reach that temperature. Recently it has been around 91-95 ° F. Please be prepared to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. All buildings and rooms are temperature controled – there will be air conditioning.
