Artistic information

Issues drama (middle/high school)
This course could address any social/political/environmental issue e.g. investigating issues faced by refugees, exploring gender diversity/equality in society or examining possibilities and consequences of an anti-racist stance.

Students will understand themselves as artists who can inspire, initiate and drive change through their creative work. They will learn how to use theatre techniques and conventions to explore and communicate important social and political issues in an engaging way, and how to consider different perspectives and viewpoints in debating any controversial issue. They will gain experience of collaborative creation strategies and the devising process for developing material, deepen their understanding by thinking through issues and develop confidence in voicing their own responses and ideas.

There will be a balance of practical and reflective experiences.

This course can also be tailored to the IB Middle Years Programme, using the key and related concepts and global contexts as well as the MYP assessment criteria.

About Bitesize courses

ISTA Bitesize courses are a series of independent online workshops, each on a particular theme, topic or area of theatre practice.

Three Bitesize courses have been developed based on a survey of areas that teachers most need in order to support their classroom practice, with more to follow soon. Each course is aimed at a particular age group. However, they are all completely adaptable for other ages and skill-levels. The structure and content of the courses links to any curriculum, with specific links to the International Baccalaureate curriculum requirements and concept-based teaching and learning.

Teachers are provided with a complete package of instruction for their students, consisting of five parts:
• three live, interactive online sessions with an ISTA artist and,
• two PowerPoint presentations for students to work through in class.

Students are encouraged to create and explore in their classroom or online environment, with the support of the ISTA artist and the materials provided in the PowerPoint presentations. The sessions build on each other and enable students to gain practical understanding of the specific topic, theme or area of practice as well as ownership of their learning. The courses can be run flexibly – as an intensive e.g. over 5 days, or extended over several weeks, depending on the needs of the school.

Here’s how can ISTA’s new Bitesize courses support you, the teacher, and your students:
• Fully structured, ready to go unit, no need to plan or research materials.
• Interactive sessions provide new stimulus activities and ideas.
• Clear learning outcomes related to the theatre practice and supported by the activities.
• Connections to different curricular programmes, including those of the IB.
• Possible interdisciplinary links with other subject areas.
• Adaptable to a range of ages and skill-levels.
• Playful, exploratory and fast-paced.
• A balance of practical and reflective experiences.
• A great way to boost learning at the end of a challenging school year!

Schedule
Once booked, we will ask you to create your own schedule. This will consist of 3 ‘slots’ lasting 90 minutes each.
Your sessions can take place during class time, before or after school, in the evenings and/or at weekends.
Upon receiving the schedule information you will have one week to complete your bespoke schedule for your students.
We also ask that you allow a minimum of 3 weeks from the time of completing your schedule to the time when your online course begins. This will enable us to secure your ISTA artists.

Once you have booked we will allocate you an event coordinator who will work with you to set up the Bitesize course experience.

School circumstances and COViD-19
Bitesize courses can work for all schools whether you are:
1. Still teaching online.
2. Operating on a blended model.
3. Back in school in a socially distanced classroom.
4. Back in school as normal.

Finances

Bitesize courses are designed for classrooms or larger groups of students. Teachers can sign up one class for example, or could combine classes. Either way we are expecting approx 20 students to take part per school, per booking.

As such we have set registration fees of GBP £600 for ISTA member schools and GBP £700 for non member schools.
(For a sign up of 20 students this works out at approx. GBP £30 per student for member schools and GBP £35 for non member schools).

If you have more than 20 students who wish to take part, please let us know and we’ll discuss options with you.
Upon receipt of your booking form you will be invoiced for the total amount and this will be due within 14 days.
Whether schools choose to cover this cost or whether you decide to divide the total cost by the number of students participating is up to you.
