Type

DP Theatre Category 1 and 2 (combined)

Master classes

All teachers will take part in one 90 minute master class on one specific aspect of the art form. In this case, exploring Kathakali dance theatre with Fenella Kelly.

Theatre

All teachers will attend one professional theatre production.
This will be a specially commissioned Kathakali performance presentation by Fenella Kelly. Part lecture, part demonstration and part performance of Kathakali dance theatre from Southern India. It will start by explaining the context and showing the conventions of the theatre tradition. Fenella will then perform alone as the anti-hero Kichaka, in a section of Kichaka Vadham (The Killing of Kichaka) from the Mahabharata. This section will be performed a couple of times to enable the audience to understand how a traditional Kathakali performance is structured using the face, body, emotions, rhythms and dance steps, all coming together to communicate what is known as the abhinaya (aesthetic communication).
