Creating Immersive Theatre

Workshop description
This workshop will introduce and explore immersive acting skills, how to interact with the audience, and how to perform in an immersive environment. Participants will also learn about the process of creating immersive theatre from ideation to execution.

  • approaches to interactive acting
  • approaches to creating immersive theatre
  • methods of creating an immersive theatre environment
  • tools and approaches used to design multiple storylines for immersive storytelling
  • the steps in the process of immersive theatre design

About your workshop leader


Wencong Chen
I’m a theatre director and immersive experience designer. I have a BA in Theatre Studies and Film Studies from Emory University. I’ve directed immersive theatre, musicals, theme park shows, and plays in the past.

I’m interested in creating transformative experiences for the audience.

Some of the past shows I’ve worked on include Sleep No More Shanghai, Universal Studio Beijing’s Raptor Encounter and Po Live, Jay Chou’s Musical The Secret, Jonathan Lee’s Musical Bygone Love, Athol Fugard’s My Children! My Africa!, The Train Driver, The Island. I’ve worked with design consulting firms such as Frog, Continuum and IDEO to create immersive experiences.

The workshop will take place on Zoom.
Joining instructions will be emailed to participants 24 hours before the event.
Some familiarity with Google Drive, Google Docs etc. would be helpful, but is not a requirement.

Places are limited to 25 participants per region

ISTA Members: GBP £52 per person
Non members GBP £65 per person

What to bring


Any materials shared with you prior to the workshop, such as the workbook. A notebook and pencil are always useful.

Space requirements
If possible, please try to have a small amount of space near to you for any practical work.
