ISTA presents...

Kuala Lumpur IB workshop - DP Theatre Category 3 and DP Practical film production Category 3

September 20 - September 22, 2019

Type

Diploma Programme Theatre – Category 3 – Collaboratively creating original theatre

This workshop represents an in-depth exploration into the process of creating theatre collectively. Participants will develop their understanding of how original theatre can be created collaboratively and presented both as learners and theatre makers.

Participants will leave with a tool kit for subsequent practice in the classroom. The workshop presents theory and strategies for establishing, developing and equipping an ensemble to create original pieces of theatre. Workshop participants become an ensemble that embarks on making a piece of theatre. Different stimuli and starting points are used, categorised and examined to create theatre, and the workshop looks at the characteristics of an effective stimulus that determines and shapes the nature of the piece being created. Devising requires a sophisticated understanding of the art form and this workshop provides an in-depth look at form, structuring and staging the material explored. Different approaches to devising are examined with reference to contemporary practice and research.

Diploma Programme Film – Category 3 – Practical film production

This workshop is for IB film teachers and theatre teachers or teachers of any subject looking to up-skill their ability to film student work. No previous IB training required for the film workshop.

Practical film production is a hands-on filmmaking workshop that aims to bring accessible practical filmmaking techniques into the classroom. It is also focussed on making film with what is available to the teachers, all that is needed is a laptop, editing software and a recording device to be able to teach and implement the activities explored in this workshop.

In this workshop participants will engage in activities to deepen their understanding of how to embed and facilitate practical filmmaking into the classroom environment. This will include a range of practical activities to cover preparing students for constructing a portfolio of film experiences and participation in collaborative filmmaking tasks along with approaches to the creation and documentation of both teacher-led and student-led film experiments, explorations and complete film projects. Practicalities include identifying clear film techniques and ideas, approaches to forming groups, production planning, developing and applying skills and approaches to screenings will be covered. The workshop will also address documentation of process and performance as filmmakers and the use of this in reflecting on the projects as a whole.

Master class

All participants will take part in one 90 minute master class.

DP Theatre Category 3: Collaboratively creating original theatre master class

Space: the final frontier with Kieran Burgess
Can scenography tell stories? Do we make the most use out of our performance space? Do we really need actors? OK, so the last one is controversial for a theatre programme, but join us as we delve into the realm of space design. Light, set, sound and even choosing an exciting space in which to tell our stories are often left to chance and can end up being last minute fixes as we focus our precious time on actors. In this master class we will focus on accenting our space and highlighting movement and moments in order to let scenography do the heavy lifting.

DP Film Category 3: Practical film production master class

Scriptwriting with Ian Pike
Participants will take part in a master class on story structure, character development, narrative and all basic scriptwriting tools.
