Master classes

Students will take part in 2 master classes, each lasting 90 minutes.

Space: the final frontier with Kieran Burgess
Can scenography tell stories? Do we make the most use out of our performance space? Do we really need actors? OK, so the last one is controversial for a theatre programme, but join us as we delve into the realms of space design. Light, set, sound and even choosing an exciting space in which to tell our stories are often left to chance and last minute fixes as we focus our precious time on actors. Here, we will focus on accenting our space and highlighting movement and moments in order to let scenography do the heavy lifting.

Embodying the elements with Lian Sutton
Anyone who’s familiar with the hit Nickelodeon animation series Avatar knows the power of the four elements; earth, water, fire and air. Putting popular fiction aside, the elements lend us the inspiration to question how we may begin to use these images of nature to help us understand our own bodies and behaviours. Further we can then go beyond this understanding and create interesting characters inspired by these very elements. In this workshop participants will explore the elements through various mediums including the Malay martial art Silat Tua, Michael Chekhov’s psycho-physical approach and Balinese mask work inspired by those two practices.

Professional development and learning (PD&L)

We invite all teachers/chaperones not taking part in IB training to take part in two PD&L workshops at no additional cost.

Theatre

All participants will attend two professional theatre performances.

Shooting Arrows Through ‘Pokok Lontar’ on Friday 20th September 2019
Shooting Arrows Through ‘Pokok Lontar’ is a performance of a local folk tale retold with a modern perspective using the world theatre tradition of Wayang Kulit puppetry. Watch as age-old shadow puppetry traditions bring to life kings, princesses, smartphones, computers and a few monsters along the way.

Masque of Revelation on Saturday 21st September 2019
Masque of Revelation is a performance that will bring to life characters that are presented via masks using the Butoh technique.
