TaPS Goals
ISTA TaPS PERSPECTIVES gives IB DP Theatre students the unique opportunity to work intensively with a series of 4 current and practising theatre professionals who each specialise in:

Collaboratively creating original theatre led by Toby Ford from Coney
Staging play texts led by Laura Ford from Fifth Word Theatre
Exploring world theatre traditions with a focus on Commedia led by Chiara D’Anna from Panta Rei
Performing theatre theory led by Amy Gwilliam with a focus on Philippe Gaulier

Working with IB theatre students from different schools, DP Theatre students will engage with each of these specialists as well as having a workshop with an IB DP Theatre specialist. The IB DP Theatre specialist will help the students to reflect on and consider how to apply their learning from TaPS to their own IB DP course. This gives students the opportunity to frame and make the most of each of their sessions with the professional artists.

Primarily working with specialist artists, usually sourced from cultural organisations where the TaPS will be held, offers us the opportunity to work with and contribute to the cultural ecology of the places where TAPS takes place.

ISTA TaPS Perspectives provides students with an understanding of how the syllabus areas of the IB DP Theatre course are applied to real-life, current theatre practice. It acts as a launchpad for students’ explorations of theatre to further pursue once back in their own schools.

Specialist workshop
All educator chaperones will take part in one 3 hour specialist workshop focusing on a specific aspect of theatre. This workshop will be led by Chiara D’Anna from Panta Rei with a focus on Commedia.

Theatre
All participants will attend two professional theatre performances.

The Empress
It is 1887, the year Queen Victoria celebrates her Golden Jubilee.
Sixteen year old Rani Das, ayah (nursemaid) to an English family arrives at Tilbury docks after a long voyage from India, to start a new life in Britain.
Transferring directly from the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon and directed by Pooja Ghai, Artistic Director of  Tamasha, this new production of The Empress will take you from the rugged gangways of Tilbury docks to the grandeur of Queen Victoria’s Palace, whilst unveiling the long and embedded culture of British Asian history.

Pygmalion
‘I’ve a right to be here if I like. Same as you’
Eliza Doolittle aspires to more than selling flowers on the streets of Covent Garden.

After a chance meeting with Professor Henry Higgins and Colonel Pickering, she finds herself the subject of a rash bet to pass her off as a lady amongst the great and the good of London society.

Olivier and Tony Award-winner Richard Jones (Endgame, The Hairy Ape) directs the Olivier Award-winning duo of Bertie Carvel (The 47th, The Crown) and Patsy Ferran (Camp Siegfried, A Streetcar Named Desire) in George Bernard Shaw’s explosively funny, biting and subversive satire on class, as the ruthless linguist Higgins attempts to transform the brilliantly irrepressible Eliza – who breaks the mould he creates for her.

All registration fees and surcharges will be invoiced once the registration window has closed.

We appreciate that some schools will already have confirmed students so please register your group as soon as possible from this date onwards

All registrations must be submitted by 24th August 2023, to allow for finalising theatre tickets and where applicable, catering, transportation etc. ahead of the event.

Deposit:
Once submitted, you will receive a non-refundable and non-transferable deposit invoice. Deposits are charged as follows:

1-5 students – GBP £500
6-10 students – GBP £800
11-15 GBP £1,100
16 or more £1,500

Your place at the event will only be confirmed if we receive payment of your deposit within 21 days.

For participants
Participants are advised to arrive into London by evening of Wednesday 11th October 2023 before day 1 and should not plan to leave the venue before 1:00pm on Saturday 14th October 2023.

Please note:
It is the responsibility of the schools/participants to ensure they have the appropriate visas, as required.

For participants
All participants are responsible for booking their own accommodation in London for the duration of TaPS. We advise that you book hotels/hostels near the venue.

For participants
No meals are provided as part of this event.

Appropriate attire
All participants must bring clothing that is suitable for physically active workshops during the day (athletic wear, PE kit, performance blacks, etc.)
Outfits suitable for attending theatre performances in the evening.

Please note:
Participants not dressed appropriately for physically active workshops may be asked to sit-out.
Participants may be asked to remove footwear, jewellery etc. for some workshops.
