Overview of the Workshop: Category 3 – Collaborative film production
Collaborative Practical film production is a practical, hands-on filmmaking workshop that aims to bring accessible collaborative practical filmmaking techniques into the classroom. It is ideal for teachers who are less experienced with the practical aspects of collaborative film production and is focussed on making film with whatever technology is available to schools – all that is needed is a laptop, editing software and a recording device to be able to effectively implement the activities explored in this workshop.

Aim of the workshop
To engage participants in a range of collaborative filmmaking activities.
To deepen understanding of how to embed and facilitate practical filmmaking into the classroom environment.
To explore a range of practical activities to help prepare students for constructing a portfolio of film experiences.
To equip participants with the skills required to facilitate collaborative filmmaking activities (including identifying clear filmmaker intentions, developing story, approaches to forming groups, production planning, developing and applying skills and approaches to screenings).
To explore a range of approaches to capturing and documenting the filmmaking process and for reflecting on developing practice.

Target audience
This workshop is for IB film teachers and theatre teachers or teachers of any subject looking to up-skill their ability to film student work. No previous IB training required for the film workshop.

Specialist workshop & specialist workshop leader (SWL)
All participants will take part in one specialist workshop with a screenwriter.
Details to be confirmed by December 2022.

Film Viewings
All participants will view two films as part of the workshop.
Details to be confirmed by December 2022.

About your workshop leader

Sharon Lacoste McDonagh
I am a self-described global citizen. My parents’ careers took my family to Zambia, England, Egypt, Ethiopia and finally Sweden where I graduated from Stockholm University. As an adult I have lived in Egypt (again), Ecuador, Canada, Turkey, Hong Kong, Japan and Luxembourg.

Before becoming a teacher I worked for many years as an Art Director in the film industry which lent me some real-world experience to bring to the classroom. I helped to develop the practical film workshop with ISTA as a way to enable other educators to access the language of film in an approachable and achievable manner for those who have little or no prior experience with the medium.

As an educator I have taught Film, Art and ToK for the past several years with the aim to guide students towards their individual voices and to enable them to express their ideas in a framework that is persuasive as well as aware. I enjoy the collaborative learning process that teaching brings and the platform it offers students to develop themselves into independent thinkers who understand the purpose and value of their learning.

I am passionate about developing an educational framework where there is balanced collaboration between the teacher and the student that is engaging, meaningful and often fun which is why I have also developed filmmatters.education, a place and space to offer training and resources to educators in film.
