ISTA presents...

Manchester IB workshop - DP Theatre Category 1 and 2

August 21 - August 23, 2019

DP Theatre Category 1 and 2

Master classes

All participants will take part in one 90 minute master class. Practising the Postdramatic with Jo Scott.
This master class introduces techniques for working with Postdramatic approaches to performance-making. With a focus on task-based performance, the use of text and space, as well as how these elements can be combined and composed, the workshop offers practical routes into making performance work that does not create a singular fictional world and instead employs a composition of diverse onstage components to evoke a range of feelings and meanings.

All participants will attend one professional theatre performance. This will be a Kathakali performance presentation by Fenella Kelly. Part lecture, part demonstration and part performance of Kathakali dance theatre from Southern India. It will start by explaining the context and showing the conventions of the theatre tradition. Fenella will then perform alone in a section of the Mahabharata. This section will be performed a couple of times to enable the audience to understand how a traditional Kathakali performance is structured using the face, body, emotions, rhythms and dance steps, all coming together to communicate what is known as the abhinaya (aesthetic communication).
