Near West/ISTA MS/HS festival

January 24 - January 27, 2019

Schools should, in the first instance book a place by emailing Mike Ludwick at Near West.

Tides of change

Starting Point

At this festival we will explore the power of nature, specifically the balance between water and earth, and how the constantly moving, changing and developing nature of these two Chinese universal elements impacts the human story.

Out & About

Facing the Lingding Ocean at the mouth of the Pearl River, the Nansha Tin Hau Palance complext is located on the southeastern slope of the Dajiao Mountain and covers about 100 hectares. It is the largest palace compound of its category in the world, with an architectural style that is a blend of the Forbidden City in Beijing and the graceful Dr. Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in Nanjing.

The Nansha Tin Hau Palace was built to worship the Goddess of sea, popularly known by the name Mazu. The palace was first built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and was renovated during the reign of Emperor Qianlong (1737-1795) in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), but was later ruined. The one we see now was rebuilt in 1994 and completed in 1996.

Participants will spend time at the palace with a view to exploring the power of nature and the balance between water and earth.
