Artistic Information

Global Challenge and Area of learning
Tuning In – Tuning into our community and what our community needs

Cultural Experience
Participants will visit Kawainui Marsh, a RAMSAR wetland of international importance, which is situated less than 100 yards from Le Jardin Academy’s campus. The learning community at Le Jardin Academy regularly engages in restoration projects at both Kahanaiki and Nā Pōhaku O Hauwahine, two sites of ecological and cultural significance. Participants will have the opportunity to witness a traditional oli (chant), listen to kapuna (elders) tell the story of Hauwahine, the protector of Kawainui, and engage in restoration work to root themselves in the mindset of “tuning into community.” In Hawaii, community refers to both humans and non-humans and hana pono (good work) is what holds community together.

The native Hawaiian story of Hauwahine, the guardian of Kawainui
