Teaching diverse content in today’s curriculum: using Playback for embodied empathy and confidence.

Workshop description
As theatre practitioners and educators we have the number one toolbox to do the imminent self-reflection and sensitivity to microaggression present in the spaces of learning.

During this workshop participants will explore and examine two original scrips: R.E.A.L (Caribbean/African American) and Zuri (Caribbean/African folklore). In both instances, the plays have been adapted and performed by and for both cultures. With limited exposure to Caribbean culture in our theatre classrooms, Zuri offers a unique opportunity for teachers to explore the challenges when teaching diverse content. R.E.A.L is a play initially written in the African American vernacular and adapted to the dialect of Trinidad and Tobago.

Learning outcomes
Participants will experience expressive arts activities designed to inspire an awakeness within oneself and awareness of the other:
• unpacking the personal context;
• fostering community through empathy and confidence;
• advocating for social justice;
• working with culturally different play texts.

How this workshop will benefit teachers in their curriculum delivery
This workshop uses creative drama, expressive arts techniques and selected playtexts for each participant:
• to courageously explore personal beliefs about anti-racism;
• to confidently expose their students to each others’ cultures and beliefs.

Target audience
All MS and HS Theatre teachers

I am from Trinidad and Tobago, studied in the United States and obtained a B.A. in Communication Arts and a M.Ed. in International Education. I am a licensed theatre arts teacher in the state of Massachusetts and an international theatre arts teacher since 1992. I have lived and taught in several countries including the US, Qatar, China, Thailand, Kenya, Turkey and Vietnam.
My pedagogical areas of interest include Augusto Boal’s Forum Theatre, Meisner’s techniques, Stanislavski’s method acting, Brecht’s Epic Theatre and Peter Brook’s empty space. Additionally, I am the founder of the non-profit Necessary Arts since 1996. With a wealth of experience in education, I am excited to bring meaningful development to both teachers and students alike.

The workshop will take place using the platform Zoom.
Places are limited to 20 participants per workshop.

The cost of the session is GBP £30 per person.

Any materials shared with you prior to the workshop, such as the workbook. Plus anything requested by the workshop leader which will be shared with you a few days prior to the workshop.

Space requirements
If possible, please try to have a small amount of space near to you for any practical work.
