The Director’s Viewpoint with Angela David (online 2 evening Europe)
January 14, 2021

While scheduled, primarily, as an evening workshop for teachers in Europe, Theatre teachers globally are invited to attend.
About the workshop
Title
The Director’s Viewpoint
Workshop description
The theories of Anne Bogart’s Viewpoints are widely known for character creation for actors. They are also useful to incorporate as a director in the rehearsal and design process to inform the entire artistic team on a unified vision. This workshop will develop an understanding of the Viewpoints and how to utilise them as a director when working with play texts. The workshop will be a healthy mix of theory and participation.
Learning outcomes
Participants will:
• discuss the Viewpoints’ system as it applies to directing and text analysis;
• engage in activities as actors related to the process of rehearsal through Viewpoints’ theories;
• engage in activities as designers related to the process of design through Viewpoints’ theories;
• create a director’s vision for a play script incorporating Viewpoints’ theories.
How this workshop will benefit teachers in their curriculum delivery
Teachers of IBDP Theatre will apply this work in the ‘working with play texts’ aspect of the course. They will gain insight and activities to use with students in exploring, researching and analysing a script with the goal of creating a director’s vision for performance. This is immediately applied to the Director’s Notebook (Production Proposal).
Target audience
DP Theatre teachers
About your workshop leader
Angela David
I have been learning through play all of my life. The play making that started in my parent’s backyard in Saskatchewan, Canada became a lifelong passion for telling stories. I have since made this my career, having created theatre and taught on five continents. It’s a great way to find truth.
That truth is what inspires me about theatre. I try to work from a point of honesty in action and word. To me, this and ensemble are the keys to engaging art. Primarily I work through physical theatre, aided by Meisner methods but technology and postdramatic theatre intrigue me as well.
I have worked as a teacher leader and administrator at the Teacher Capacity Building Workshops in Moshi, Tanzania. These workshops were a sharing of best practice and teaching pedagogy. I have been an instructional leader since 2002, working with teachers to develop their curricula and teaching practice. I have worked with IBDP Theatre examination since 2009 and have been a Team Leader for the Collaborative Project Portfolio since 2019. My work with Viewpoints has also been long and varied in theatre classroom teaching and my own research, the highlight of which was practical workshops with the SITI Company, including a keynote speech and discussion with Anne Bogart, in Lima, Peru in 2017.
