Workshop description
This workshop focuses on all the types of research that are required during the Diploma Theatre course and for the four assessment tasks. It will explore the nature of sources that are required, how to document research, cite sources and also explore academic and somatic research approaches.

Why is this focal area important within the context of the course?
All areas of the core curriculum and the four assessment tasks require research in some shape or form, and all require slightly different approaches.

Learning outcomes for participants
Students will learn:
The range of different types of sources available.
How to identify different areas of research and then what is appropriate resource material.
Ways to approach research academically, actively, somatically and practically.
How to meet the needs of academic honesty in presentations, processes and written documents.
How to do citations and write a reference list or bibliography.

Why/how is this session of value to DP Theatre students?
Students need to carry out a broad range of research, including into world theatre traditions, performance conventions, plays, devising companies and starting points. For HL students this includes research into theorists and theory. This workshop prepares students to carry out appropriate research effectively and independently.

Target audience
DP Theatre students

I am an international drama specialist, teacher, teacher trainer and dancer. I co-founded the international theatre company in Istanbul, was a member of Physical Theatre company in Brazil and in contemporary dance companies in the United Kingdom, India, Brazil and Egypt. Now I am a freelance artist based in the UK.

I love all the performing arts and play the flute and saxophone in bands, learn drumming and sing in choirs. I also teach and perform Latin American dances including salsa and tango. Since 2008 I have been learning Kathakali. I now teach and perform this dance-theatre tradition.

I have worked for ISTA since 1999, was on the board of trustees for six years and am now an Honorary Life Member. Since 1999 I have hosted festivals on four continents (introducing ISTA to South America) and taken on the roles of CD, Rep, TWL, SEL for TaPS and Artist in Residence.

Places are limited to 20 participants per workshop.

You will receive a link to the Zoom call the day before the workshop.

The cost of the session is GBP £20 per person.

Any research you have done so far, written bibliographies, journals and the Spotlight workbook.

Space requirements
If possible, please try to have a small amount of space near to you for any practical work.
