ISTA presents...

Victorian Melodrama (Singapore) Twilight

September 18 - September 18, 2018

Workshop title

Victorian Melodrama

‘Come! Come! Thou villain and learn the secrets of the Ancient art!’

Workshop description

This practical workshop will introduce participants to the concepts and skills which underpin Melodrama as a world theatre tradition using body, gesture, movement, voice and facial expression as storytelling media. Through the use of text and physicality, participants will explore ways of engaging with Victorian Melodrama in the classroom thus accessing this misunderstood form of theatre which subtly entwines sensuality and music across time and space to celebrate [and exaggerate] the folly of the human condition.

Session #1 – Melodrama – from roots to shoots from 4:30-6:00pm
Origins (timeline) – the world of Melodramas; Victorian Melodrama its time, place and topicality; communicating through gesture, movement and voice; gestural conversations; text, music and melodrame – a recipe made in heaven.

Session #2 – Expressing emotions in a story from 6:00-7:30pm
Stock characters and their acting conventions: the female ‘S’, the teapot stance, pair blocking, overspeech, physical characterisation; entries and exits; the power of the narrative tableau; and working with text, music and stock characters in the classroom.

Target audience

A twilight session for MS/HS theatre teachers and HS theatre students.

Learning outcomes

All participants will leave with a practical and hands on understanding of a new world theatre tradition.

Teachers will leave with a new addition to their theatre tool box to use in the classroom and develop into longer term projects and units of work.

Students will leave with a practical understanding of an unfamiliar theatre tradition enabling them to develop this material into a range of projects addressing different aspects of the DP Theatre and other curriculums.

About your workshop leader

I am recently retired, after many years at the International School of Geneva (Ecolint) with teaching experiences in Canada, United Kingdom and the United States following a brief sojourn as a university research fellow – exploring theatre and learning approaches. ISTA posts include ensemble leader/teacher trainer, president of the board of trustees and honorary life member.

I have always loved stories—through speech, song, image or movement— always been fascinated by accounts of the human adventure. The urge to learn pulled me into contact with the theories of Laban. My growth as a theatre person was heavily influenced by personal experiences and interactions with Boal, Barba, Brook and Benison.

I have been involved with the IB since the 1970s when I encountered an infant IB through Theatre and TOK. Many years have since passed and experiences such as IB Theatre teacher, deputy chief examiner, programme developer, teacher and student workshop leader (face2face/online) and workshop leader trainer gave me the tools to be an IB workshop session observer in disciplines across the IB continuum to further nourish the ISTA-IB relationship.
