Over the summer, Sally and I have been collecting resources in order to further educate ourselves on Black Lives Matter and anti-racism practices in theatre education. We are sharing the first of our resource lists with the ISTA community in the hopes of supporting theatre educators to reflect, review and revise their own practice going forward. It is our hope that this, and future lists of resources will inspire and empower ISTA teachers and artists to continue the collaboration by contributing other resources to the list as we move through the year.
ISTA will be offering diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) specific PD&L sessions and TTT conversations throughout the year and we have also discussed some further forms of action to pursue over the course of 2020-2021. If you are interested in volunteering to be involved in this work, please email Malina firstname.lastname@example.org.
From my own recent interactions with local theatre companies in Toronto, the immediate focus is on developing outreach programmes for BIPOC students in middle and high schools so that they have the opportunity to see themselves represented in the industry – both on and off the stage. Perhaps this can be a starting point of reflection for teachers as they launch the new school year. What small changes can be made to help students see themselves more in the content being presented?
Be sure to join us at the following offerings in 2020 and stay tuned for our January through May 2021 events that will be announced over the next few months.
